What is AI & ML?

While it is common for the terms AI and ML to be used interchangeably, they are two different and distinct fields. Machine Learning is, in fact a branch of AI, and can be described as a computer algorithm that allows computer programs to automatically improve through experience. This basically means that any program that integrates machine learning will get smarter as it collects more data points. This is an important aspect of ML, as it is important to remember that ML is useless without an effective number of data points for the program to learn from.

AI is bit harder to define, as the definition is constantly evolving along with technology. The high level meaning of AI is that it is when we make programs behave in ways that we thought required human intelligence. However, what makes it hard to define is that our standards are getting higher in terms of AI. For example, a computer that could play chess in the 1970’s was considered AI back then, but most people wouldn’t think of that as AI now, as it is now a relatively dull feature on almost all computer’s operating systems.
